RadboudumcSamenvatting van het onderzoek
Early identification of patients that will benefit from palliative care is challenging. To enable general practitioners to provide good care to as many patients in need of palliative care as possible, they need an easy and non-time consuming screening instrument.
The Surprise Question (SQ1; Would I be surprised if this patient were to die within 12 months?) is widely used to identify palliative patients. However, its predictive value is low. Therefore, I propose a second question (SQ2) to SQ1 if answered with ‘no’: ‘Would I be surprised if this patient is still alive after 12 months?’ SQ1 and SQ2 together are called the double surprise question (DSQ). The goal of my research is to explore whether the use of the DSQ is an easy to use and accurate instrument in general practice to screen on palliative care needs
