Erasmus MCSamenvatting van het onderzoek
The patellofemoral joint is often ignored in knee osteoarthritis research. However, OA often starts in the PFJ and later progresses to the tibiofemoral joint.
In adolescents and young adults, patellofemoral pain is the most frequently reported knee complaint. PFP has been linked to the development of PFOA, mainly because of the converging risk factors. Recently, we showed that the association between joint geometry and structural joint abnormalities linked to OA are already present in PFP patients. During the prepubertal phase, specific musculoskeletal complaints, such as PFP, arise. During this prepubertal phase, bone is more responsive to loading and more likely to change due to joint forces.
To obtain knowledge on ageing of the knee we will assess the patellofemoral joint geometry by creating 3D models of the knee using all MR images collected within the Generation R cohort at the 13-year follow-up.
